Michael McPhail

Senior Research Officer

DPhil, BSc (Hons)

Michael’s research interests cover a range of mathematical modelling challenges and, more recently, scientific computing problems. He has studied problems in biomedicine, fluid mechanics, and mathematical geoscience. Through his attendance at Maths in Industry Study Groups he has collaborated on problems ranging from organisational strategies for reducing jams in marathons to the sustainability of fish populations. The thread tying all these projects together is the application of mathematics to better understand and interact with the real world.

In 2014 Michael completed a Bachelor of Science degree as part of the Advanced Science Program at the University of Western Australia; majoring in Physics and Applied Mathematics. His honours thesis involved the mechanistic modelling of a method for nanoparticle-based targeted drug release. In 2019 Michael attained a DPhil from the University of Oxford as a part of the Industrially Focussed Mathematical Modelling Centre for Doctoral Training program. Before joining The Kids Research Institute Australia, He was a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford. As a PDRA, Michael investigated melt-water—ice-sheet interactions for the Greenland ice sheet.
