Project summary
Trans Pathways is set to receive an update ahead of the ten-year anniversary of the release of this seminal study from The Kids Research Institute Australia. The 2016 national online survey – still the largest study to date on the mental health of trans young people aged 14-25 in Australia – has had significant community, clinical practice and policy impact both nationally and internationally, highlighting the mental health needs of trans young people and barriers they experience when seeking support.
In 2026, a decade after the initial project, we plan to launch Trans Pathways 2, collecting new data to provide an updated, comprehensive picture of the mental health and care pathways of trans young people in Australia today. Trans Pathways 2 will address current knowledge gaps, further developing the evidence base around the mental health, wellbeing, and support needs of contemporary trans young people.
Project aims
- Quantify and describe the mental health of trans young people in Australia.
- Explore barriers and facilitators to medical and mental health services currently being experienced by trans young people in Australia.
- Compare Trans Pathways 2 mental health and service experience data to data collected through Trans Pathways 1.
