Project description
The primary aim of this study is to determine which specific viruses and bacteria contribute to childhood pneumonia in Western Australia. In addition we aim to determine the frequency, predictors and clinical significance of respiratory virus-bacterial co-infection; to assess whether there is a relationship between the loads of specific viruses and bacteria; and to assess whether load varies between children with pneumonia (both mild and severe) and community controls. In the future, we wish to establish a biobank for future studies on childhood pneumonia and respiratory infections.
