Exploring LGBTQA+ young people’s experiences of suicidality: a qualitative study

Investigators:  Penelope Strauss, Helen Morgan, Associate Professor Yael Perry, Prof Ashleigh Lin

Overview: This study aims to clarify the pathways through suicidality experienced by LGBTQA+ young people to identify areas for possible intervention. The findings will also inform LGBTQA+ suicide prevention guidelines that the team is currently working on.

Summary: LGBTQA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and/or gender diverse, queer/questioning, asexual and other diverse sexualities and genders) young people are at high risk of suicide. Despite the increased risk of suicide, there has been little qualitative exploration of how LGBTQA+ young people cope during times of feeling suicidal. We are interviewing LGBTQA+ young people with a history of suicidal thoughts and/or attempts, as well as parents of LGBTQA+ young people with a history of suicidal thoughts and/or attempts to understand what was happening for the young person at the time of feeling suicidal and the coping methods they used to get through that time. The results of this study will provide insight into possible areas for intervention to decrease the high rates of suicidality in LGBTQA+ young people.
