Plain language summary: Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is associated with poor maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Acamprosate is a medication registered in Australia for the treatment of alcohol use disorders. Some research indicates that acamprosate may function to be protective against neurological damage caused by in utero exposure to alcohol, however we do not know if it is safe for use during pregnancy.
