Investigators: Robyn Johnston, Karen Lombardi, Gina Trapp, Karen Forde, Joelie Mandzufas

External Collaborators: Conor Gilligan (University of Newcastle)

Project Partners: The Fathering Project; Road Safety and Drug Education Branch, Department of Education WA; SportWest; Mental Health Commission; Alcohol and Drug Foundation.

Fathers play a significant role in developing children’s alcohol-related attitudes and behaviours. However, fathers are underrepresented in alcohol-related and child health research, hence knowledge of their attitudes to alcohol-related parenting and preferences for information is limited.

This project will explore fathers’ attitudes and behaviours regarding the alcohol-related parenting of 10-17-year-old children. Intervention messages and framing most likely to resonate with fathers to help reduce and delay adolescent alcohol use will be identified. The findings will be used to guide development of future intervention approaches to maximise fathers’ roles in reducing adolescent alcohol-related harm.

This project has been funded by Healthway as a 2-year Exploratory Grant (2020-2022).
