Premature to conclude no genetic basis to the association between smoking and major depressive disorder

We analyzed two large-scale surveys, and found high rates of smoking in people with mood disorders and both with and without substance dependence disorders.

Abstract

We analyzed data from two large-scale population-based epidemiological surveys and found that while smoking rates were highest in people with mood disorders who also had other substance dependence disorders, rates of smoking in people with mood disorders and no substance dependence disorders were still significantly elevated above population smoking rates.
