WA Government delivers funding boost to research sector

The Kids Research Institute Australia is one of 19 Western Australian health and medical research organisations to benefit from a major funding boost to help cover the true cost of their research.

Announced this week by the State Government, the Research Infrastructure Support program awarded $25 million to the sector to support the indirect and operational costs associated with research.

Institute Executive Director Professor Jonathan Carapetis said the investment by the Cook Government would help to ease the financial burden facedby the sector and allow medical researchers to focus on tackling some of the biggest health challenges of our time.

“We congratulate the Government for its commitment and investment in the health and medical research sector to help deliver better health outcomes for the community, not just in WA but nationally and indeed, globally,” Professor Carapetis said.

The funding will enable The Kids to cover the  costs of undertaking research that are not usually provided by research grants, and costs associated with operating research equipment, facilities and services.

Professor Carapetis said the Research Infrastructure Support program was critical because the structure of research grants meant that funds could only be spent on specific costs like salaries.

Other essential costs such as human resources, finance and reporting, commercialisation, compliance, laboratory space, cyber security and technology platforms (along with many others) need to be covered by funds raised  by the Institute.
