The Kids Research Institute Australia researchers have been awarded more than $8 million in prestigious project and scholarship grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
Director of The Kids Research Institute Australia Professor Jonathan Carapetis congratulated those who secured this highly competitive funding.
“This is fantastic news for our researchers and will enable them to continue to make a real and tangible difference to the lives of children through their research,” Professor Carapetis said.
“This national funding will go directly to projects tackling childhood illnesses including cystic fibrosis, food allergy, lung disease in preterm babies, and rheumatic fever and heart disease.”
“Our researchers continue to punch above their weight. 18% of the project grant applications we submitted this year were successful, which is higher than the national average. We also secured over a million dollars more in funding this year compared to last year. This is testament to the quality and hard work of our The Kids scientists, and the supportive environment we offer for research.”

- Debbie Palmer and Susan Prescott – Maternal diet rich in eggs and peanuts to reduce food allergies: a randomised controlled trial. $3,668,161.90
- Jonathan Carapetis, Anthony Bosco, Patrick Holt and Glenn Pearson – Towards a diagnostic test for rheumatic fever. $2,117,967.10

- Charlie McLeod (Supervisor: Tom Snelling) – Improving the design of pragmatic clinical trials in children. $126,437
- Rosemary Wyber (Supervisor: Jonathan Carapetis) – Evidence-based policy to end rheumatic heart disease in Australia. $126,437
This latest grant and scholarship funding follows on from last month’s announcement where seven NHMRC Fellowships were secured by The Kids Researchers in conjunction with The University of Western Australia totalling more than $2 million.
