Experiences of stigma and mental health in teenagers

We need a better understanding of what it’s like to be a teenager attracted to the same gender in Australia today.

Are you 14-18 years old and attracted to people the same gender as you?

We want you to help us understand how you feel other people see and treat you, and how this affects your mental health.

What is the study about?

Young people who are attracted to people the same gender are at a higher risk of developing mental health problems, in large part because of the way society views same-gender sexuality. This may be a particularly big problem for young people in high school. Society is changing, however, and we need a better understanding of what effect changes in social climate have had on what it’s like to be a teenager who’s attracted to the same gender in Australia today.

The aim of this project is to develop an updated understanding of the experiences of stigma in teenagers who are attracted to the same gender. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you feel other people see you, the way this makes you feel, and how it affects the way you see yourself.

Who can take part?

We are looking for young people aged between 14 and 18 years who are attracted to the same gender.

What is involved?

Participation in this project involves taking part in a one-on-one interview. You can talk to us in whatever way is most comfortable for you: online via a messaging app, in person, or over the phone. The interviews shouldn’t take more than an hour, but can be longer if you have a lot to share! If you choose to participate, you will be reimbursed for your time with a $30 gift card.

How can I get involved?

If you would like to share your experiences and contribute to research on how we can help young people like you, register your interest by contacting Dylan at Dylan.Gilbey@telethonkids.org.au
